![]() I have in fact decided to go to a static tan on Dall sheep and Mt. Tom.to answer your question I have the 45 gallon tanner and I usually run 3 caribou, or two Black bear, I have ran 3 small ones before and did just fine. Do you know if Van Dykes crystals are Alum.the same as Rinehart's. Is this the way you are running the EZ or are you running it constant for 4 hours? Are you adding the EZ directly into your original solution or are you making a separate tanning solution with the EZ? A lot of questions here sorry, but I have wanted to experiment with the EZ in the tanner for a while now, and test the results against just using the Alum tanning crystals. Only enough pressure to seal the door is needed when running the EZ He said not to run it constantly with the EZ. He says that when running the EZ you should only run it for 15 minutes then rest for 45min do this over a 4 hour period. I have tanned everything from Jackrabbit to elk in mine with no problems.Ĭlick to expand.I have been corresponding with Bruce Rittle on using EZ in the tanner. I get plenty of stretch and have never lost a cape, but I will apply Stop Rot to one when it comes in if I have any doubts. I use the Van Dykes crystals, 1#/ gallon of water/ cape, tan for 4 hours, drain and flesh, add 2 ounces of EZ 100 and tan for 3-4 more hours, drain and oil, then I usually freeze until ready to mount or mount right away. I then wash in Dawn, final rinse in Downy and drain. I take a raw cape, turn the ears and lips, rough flesh it, if there is not much meat on it I may not even run it over the flesher. I don't have to mess with tanks and space is not a problem, when done with it it rolls under my flesher and is out of the way, I have a plastic tub that I drain it into and that is all that is required. I have put hundreds of capes through mine and love it. Have never had trouble with mine sealing unless the gasket is damaged and that is easy to replace. Personally I have used a pressure tanner since they first came out, the first one was the lined tank and it eventually rusted out, I bought a stainless tank and have replaced the motor once. BUT.You will have a little more shrinkage in drying than what you will get from the Krowtan.Įveryone is going to have their favorite way to tan and as long as you are turning out a quality cape that is what we are all striving for. It stretches nicely and due to the properties of alum in setting the hair you can save a questionable hide that you might lose otherwise. The Bucktan and Arrowhead crystals are an alum tan. I have had the powder coated tanner for 7 years and the only area showing wear and a little rust is the top of the bolt receivers that the washers rub against. The tanner is no more hard to rinse off than rinsing out your containers you use for Krowtan or any other tan. It is not messy or a pain, it is in fact easy and quick. If you are using Rineharts crystals (bucktan or arrowhead) there is no neutralizing other than rinsing and or washing in a little dawn or era. Rinse your hide and let it drain then oil and sweat it. You will see any pink or fleshy area's if they are not tanned through. if you are wanting to completely tan in one day then run the hide for 3 or 4 hours then remove it, shave an place it back into the tanner and run for a couple more hours. If the hide got twisted you might need to shave it,place it back into the tan and run it for an hour. Most hides will be tanned complete at this point. If you want to you can run it over night take the hide out and shave it the next day. add a capfull of scour and 1/2 cup of bucktan oil. Mix your crystals 1lb to a gallon of water. Just flesh, wash in dawn or degreaser of your choice, and place in your tanner. Do not salt your hide before pressure tanning. When releasing the pressure on the tanner place a small length of air hose over the air quick connect and the loose end into a bucket of water. Just make sure you wipe the seal off each time and the inside lip of the tanner. There is no mess or trouble sealing the lid. ![]() The pressure tanner works great especially if you are wanting to go from a raw fleshed hide to finished tan in one day.
